Hellblazer
These are pages for a 2-issue DC/Vertigo book called Hellblazer. It was on these pages where I first began
pushing a really messy style with a lot of black. Whereas I usually go over something with inks once, this
process is a lot more like painting in that I'm constantly going back and forth with inks & whites to create
a layered effect that I think really adds to the book. I was also inspired by an Italian artist named Toppi
to start playing around with pattern and decorative line work to create middle grays. At one point I accidentally
created a thumbprint with my hand. With this messier style it looked really nice, so for the rest of
the book I used thumbprints on a regular basis. (If these pages are ever used in a crime then the forensics are going to point to me.)
